LOC Group CEO appointed to Advisory Board of project to support Portugal’s strategic investment in people for the offshore renewable industry

LOC Group, the premier international marine and engineering consulting firm, is pleased to announce that it has been appointed to the Advisory Board of The TWIND project. To date, LOC Group has been involved with more than 80% of global wind farm constructions, making the Group an expert in this arena.

The project was launched in July 2019 and will have a duration of three years, with a total budget of €796,000. The objective is to create a network of specialized research professionals, focused on the field of offshore wind energy, to support an emerging industry in Portugal. The industry is expected to experience significant growth over the coming years, and, at present, there is no existing training curriculum in-country.

The project is being coordinated by WavEC, a private non-profit association dedicated to consultancy and R&D activities in the field of offshore renewable energy and aquaculture. The TWIND project includes three internationally recognized research entities: Tecnalia Research & Innovation (Spain), Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (United Kingdom) and Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands).

TWIND is aligned with several National and European priorities, namely the UK government’s Industrial Strategy, the Portuguese Industrial Strategy for Ocean Renewable Energies, published in 2017, and the SET Offshore Wind Implementation Plan, adopted in June 2018, establishing a consolidation path for WavEC’s strategy in this area and stimulating the development of a supply chain in Portugal for floating offshore wind.

R V Ahilan, CEO of LOC Group, commented:

“Being asked to join the Advisory Board for such an important project is a great honour and I am delighted to accept. We have played a significant role in global wind farm developments, having been involved in more than 80% of global wind farm constructions to date, and the evolution of wind technologies remains a core focus of LOC Group.  As a people business, I am pleased that we are supporting the development of talent to enter the offshore renewables industry, which by all accounts will be one of the fastest growing energy industries.”

José Cândido, Head of Economy & Industry at WavEC, TWIND Coordination, commented:

“We are truly enthusiastic about starting this new project and we see it as a great opportunity to strengthen our capacities and extend our network specifically in the offshore wind sector. LOC is a key player in this sector and having them onboard will be paramount to the success of this endeavour. In their capacity as Advisory Board member they will play a crucial role in the strategic orientation of the project, consolidating the necessary industrial, market-oriented perspective of our efforts.”
