Giving port pilots a bird’s eye view

“Digital technology, drones and the world wide web have enabled a marine pilot to literally view the vessel that he is piloting as though he is a seagull above the ship. Mega container vessels, passenger ships, Valemax bulk carriers, VLCCs, ULCCs and vessels of deeper drafts are now typically 360 to 400m long – with beams in excess of 55m. Ports are increasingly under commercial pressure to service these marine giants using the same ‘tools’ as were developed to service smaller vessels.

LOC Australia’s Senior Marine Consultant, Clive Sheard is featured in the July / August 2020 issue of International Tug & OSV Magazine, in an article discussing the use of drone technology for enhancing the safety of port pilotage operations.
